Gaza & The Cowardly Blathering Of Arab & Muslim Americans

Zogby with his good friend Martin Indyk on MSNBC

[Ikhras NoteDuring Israel’s eight-day onslaught on Gaza a select few Arab and Muslim Americans appeared in the mainstream US media as representatives of the Palestinian side of the conflict or spokespersons for the Palestinian, Arab and Muslim communities. These groups and individuals do not represent the views of the Palestinian, Arab or Muslim communities in the US, and were certainly not appointed as spokespersons for the Palestinian people under occupation.]

To our knowledge, during the entire eight days of Israeli air, sea, and land bombardment of Gaza not a single authentic Palestinian-American voice or any neutral, objective expert on the Arab world was invited to appear or write in mainstream television or print media. Instead what we watched was a parade of pseudo-analysts, Arab Zionists, anti-Palestinian ideologues, self-appointed spokespersons of all stripes, and even a couple of comedians. All of them, without exception, were invited to parrot the Israel narrative, or at best, offer polite criticism of Israel in the name of Palestinians and Arab or Muslim Americans.

Lebanese-American neo-conservative Fouad Ajami appeared on CNN almost daily to do what he does best which is justify every Israeli aggression as the inevitable consequence of the Arabs’ refusal to behave as civilized people. Hussein Ibish, from the American Task Force on Palestine, the Arab-American wing of the pro-Israel lobby, also appeared on CNN & published a couple of articles during this period advocating views no different than Israel’s Ambassador to the US and Ibish’s dinner companion, Michael Oren. Under the façade of somber, objective analysis Ibish offered a version of events that would be welcomed by the propagandists of Benjamin Netanyahu’s (Hussein refers to him with the loving nickname “Bibi”) Zionist regime.

Yet token Arab Zionists like Ajami or Ibish may not be quite as misleading or harmful as the ostensible advocates and defenders of the Palestinians in the US.  After all, by now they’re both largely recognized as anti-Arab, pro-Israel ideologues and political fraudsters. Those that are more misleading and damaging are the likes of James Zogby. After issuing a disgraceful statement on Gaza on behalf of his one-man outfit Zogby appeared on MSNBC with his good friend and Zionist fanatic Martin Indyk to have a friendly chat about what the US should be doing. There were no condemnations and no mention of the unconditional US support of Israel’s war crimes. With his characteristic mainstream blathering the quintessential opportunist has always been quite adept at using Israel’s wars on Palestinians and Arabs as a tool in his shameless self-promoting activism.

And it’s not just Arab-Americans. Palestinians are fortunate enough to have a larger group of Muslim Americans from which the mainstream media can pluck out a select few to represent their side within the strictly defined parameters of public discourse on Israel & Palestine in this country. The Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Muslim Public Affairs Council also found an opportunity in Israel’s bombardment of Gaza to promote their organizations in the media.  Spokespersons from these two groups, most of whom are not Palestinians or Arabs, were invited based on the sole qualification of belonging to a Muslim-American organization. Unwittingly playing into the Zionist narrative, they’re invited to represent the “Muslim side” in what is framed as a religious war between Muslims and Jews.

A couple of clowns from that quickly proliferating group of very lame and unfunny comedians were also able to get in on the act, and use Israel’s latest murder spree as an opportunity to appear on obscure cable channels to advance a mediocre career on the margins of American pop culture.

None of these organizations or individuals is invited to speak based on their expertise of the region or as authentic voices of Palestinians or Palestinian-Americans. They are selected based on their willingness and ability to strictly follow the rigid mainstream American narrative on Israel and Palestine.  Unburdened by the need to appear as defenders of Palestinian rights, token Arab Zionists like Ajami and Ibish offer more relaxed performances while others strain to ostensibly defend the Palestinians without offending American political and media sensibilities.  Not a single US media appointed spokesperson for Palestinians, whether identified as Palestinian, Arab, or Muslim or presented as an academic, activist, or community leader offered a clear moral condemnation of Israel’s massacre in Gaza or US government complicity in its war crimes. That was left to those who will rarely, if ever, be invited to appear in mainstream media outlets because they refuse to sacrifice their conscience and humanity in exchange for being designated as “one of the reasonable ones” among the mostly crazy and extremist Arabs or Muslims.

Palestinian-American Human Rights Attorney and Activist Lamis Deek said it best:

When those who suffer most, who pay the ultimate price in Gaza support the resistance, how dare ‘activists’ opine on whether it’s strategic or it ‘alienates Americans’? ….There is no shortage of resources dedicated to publishing the Zionist perspective, are we afraid of the work associated with publishing all other perspectives? Are we afraid of how it reflects on us when it reflects on Palestinians in Gaza as death and destruction…?

And if those alleged academics, activists, comedians, and community leaders (and it’s often difficult to tell them apart) are indeed afraid of condemning Zionist massacres and defending Palestinian rights, including the right to self-defense,  they should at least have enough respect for the victims of the aggression they refuse to condemn to simply ikhras.

As a Palestinian refugee, born in Lebanon in 1950, one thing that I despise the most are those so called Arabs/Palestinians that do Israel’s work in the name of Peace, under the cover of Negotiations/communications. Israel does not respect the weak/collaborators, they respect people who are steadfast and stand for what they believe in. That’s why Abbas/PA are not getting anywhere. Palestinians need to unite under one banner and speak with one strong voice, Resist is to exist. Freedom is not given, Freedom is taken and achieved by all forms of resisting the Israeli Occupation, and lifting the Siege of Gaza, by ALL means nessesary….

These kinds of speakers trotted out as stage props for the Zionist Circus are used to muddy the waters of a very simple Conflict.

The Conflict isn’t ancient, it isn’t over religious rivalries or about two Peoples who simply cannot share the same land.

The conflict is purely about land theft, and is no more complicated than any other armed robbery.

Allow me to clear the mud from the waters:

The Vatican on Gaza: Israel is a Baby-Killer”
    First Publish: 11/21/2012, 11:45 PM

Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, President of the Vatican Council for Culture, commenting on the war between Israel and Hamas, delivered a severe attack on the Jewish people: “I think of the ‘massacre of the innocents’. Children are dying in Gaza, their mothers’ shouts is a perennial cry, a universal cry”.

The Catholic Church high official equated Israel’s operation in Gaza against terror groups with the New Testament story of Herod’s slaughter of Jewish babies in his effort to kill Jesus.

Ravasi, who is one of the most popular Catholic cardinals and the director of the Church’s policy on culture, called Israelis baby-killers in a shameless form of anti-Semitism which subtly accuses the Jewish State of trying to murder the new Jesus, symbolized by the Palestinian peopl

Telling truths about Israel that Zionists would rather remain covered up is not anti-Semitic. It’s merely telling the truth. False charges of anti-Semitism such as this one have been successfully used for decades to crush any dissenting voices against Israel’s criminal activities, including numerous actual war crimes against innocent people who are in the way of Israel’s relentless theft of ever more Palestinian land.

What Cardinal Ravasi was describing is this:

This looks like massacring innocents to me.

Fifteen students belonging to a group of activists calling themselves “We are all Hana Shalabi” managed to climb on top of the roof of the Scottish Parliament building in Holyrood, Edinburgh, to stage a protest against Israel’s ongoing occupation of Palestinians, urging onlookers to stand with the oppressed, not the oppressors.

Salaams, I am so glad that you have brought up this point “…..demographics”. But unlike you I blame and hold anyone who advocates savage insane barbarity against those they occupy occupied. And bear in mind that this is extreme perfidious ideology.
Back in 2005 – 2006 the hellis were given unlimited time to plan, design, execute….. the insanity – APARTHIED WALL by the Italian RAI – Radio Audio Italiana. We received email from one of our friends asking us to inform everyone because these Dr Savages were planning atrocities. We DID. Not a single Muslim/Arab news/journalist outlet bothered to contact us.
The Israhellis are so obsessed with the Palestinian demographic that you will find it chilling listening to them discussing WHOLESALE BARBARITY.
So do not say that “I do not blame….” they are GUILTY

“Mahmoud who was only 12-years-old at the time of 2009 attacks, saw his father shot in cold blood by the Israeli soldiers. He told the panel that he and his friends were playing football and mud balls around a fruit tree when they saw F16 planes flying in the area and shooting bombs and missiles. He related that there were also many soldiers on the grounds shooting at the walls of homes. He also saw parachutists coming down and landing on the highest buildings in the area and anyone who went out of their homes were shot dead.

Displaying maturity beyond his young age, Mahmoud related the terrifying ordeal he and his family underwent during the January 2009 attacks. The soldiers while shooting randomly at the family shot his 4-year-old brother twice in the chest and once in the head and four of his other brothers in their legs and behind the ear.

I hope at some point you encourage readers to submit examples of Kosher-approved house Arab/Muslim/Palestinians in their own communities. I’m sure it could become a regular and popular feature for your site.

There’s probably a house Arab/Muslim/Palestinian in every U.S. town that “progressive” Zionists position as the “moderate” voice (usually those involved in interfaith dialogue) while those activists who advocate the right of return, equality and the vision of a singular democratic state with a constitution are marginalized as extremists.

Our local “Poster Palestinian” accepted the city’s “Peace Builder Award” in a well-attended ceremony at the synagogue, nominated by the very rabbi who had organized and written against Palestinian speaker, Ali Abunimah. This was just after he stepped down (didn’t renew his term) from the Eugene Human Rights Commission (EHRC) during the time I had petitioned them in July to issue a strong statement condemning Israel for the Mavi Marmara massacre. No doubt he would have been pressured by his Zionist friends to obstruct or sanitize the statement and if he had done that, he would have been outed to his people as the house Arab/Muslim/Palestinian he functions as in this community so he did the only thing he could do when backed into a corner – get out – and he was well-rewarded for it.

This rabbi is on J Street’s rabbinical board, has concerns about “demographics”, refers to Israel as a “Jewish” state and spearheads the “exchange of populations myth”* to obstruct advocacy for the Palestinian right of return. He signed along with another local progressive-left rabbi the 1300–some signature rabbis letter in opposition to the recent Methodist and Presbyterian divestment initiatives, and helps the Jewish Federation in opposition to our work for full Palestinian human rights.

I don’t blame the rabbi – he’s just doing his job as he sees it. I blame the Palestinian who participates in this collaboration and will be participating as keynote speaker for the upcoming city’s EHRC Universal Declaration of Human Rights day event. These beloved uncles allow themselves to function as major obstacles in the path of human rights advocacy.

More needs to be written on this ancient tactic of colonialism (the carrot part of the stick and carrot) as potential activists – especially students – need to recognize and understand the betrayal and how to navigate around it.
